Australia It’s no wonder that the capital city of South Australia is a hot favourite with international students around the world. It was voted one of the world’s 10 most livable cities, making it a top choice for those looking to start a new life abroad. If you’re planning to move here in the New Year, you should know the cost of living in Adelaide. This will help you set realistic expectations and budget accordingly!

1. Rent

Finding perfect accommodation is the most important task you need to do. The cost of accommodation directly depends on whether you decide on living in the CBD area or in the suburbs. Naturally, the CBD area is preferable because of its close proximity to entertainment options, including popular restaurants and shopping spaces. Additionally, the area also has free Wi-Fi as an added bonus!

The average rent in Adelaide is A$190-A$450, based on the accommodation’s proximity to the CBD area and amenities offered. This is for fully-furnished, student-only properties that are inclusive of all bills to help you track your expenses better. Many on-site amenities are also offered for free, including a games zone, fully-fitted kitchen, BBQ, lounge area, and more.

2. Food

Eating out regularly in Adelaide can be an expensive affair. This is because the average meal costs around A$20. To avoid this, most students end up cooking for themselves. This is why it’s important to have access to a fully-fitted kitchen at your accommodation. You can easily buy fresh produce from farmer’s markets to significantly reduce the cost of living in Adelaide. Some of the best ones are Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market and Adelaide Hills Farmers Market. Both offer a stunning range of quality ingredients – from heritage apples and pickled vegetables to olive oil and ocean trout!

3. Travel

There is no dearth of public transport in Adelaide – from buses and trams to taxis and bicycles. Those living in the CBD area can even borrow bikes for free! Additionally, the Adelaide metro provides free tram service from the Adelaide Entertainment Centre to South Terrace. Paid modes include taxis that can be used during the busiest days such as Friday and Saturday nights. However, opting for free transport services can considerably cut down your cost of living in Adelaide as a student.

4. Entertainment

Adelaide’s massive entertainment options are partially responsible for its reputation as one of the world’s most livable cities. You can head to the cinemas, visit a live music lounge, or simply go on a good ol’ bar crawl. A standard dinner for two will set you back by A$44 while a cocktail at a downtown pub will cost you A$18. A cheeky pint comes in at A$8 and if you’re headed to the movies, expect to shell out A$15 a person.

5. Healthcare

International students must get an overseas student health cover (OSHC) before moving to Adelaide. Students can buy this either through their university or directly through the insurance provider before arriving in the city. A standard coverage starts at A$609, and includes doctor’s appointments, hospital visits, ambulance charges, and more.
